A steel-frame warehouse or godown needs holding-down bolts in the footings, grade 8.8 bolts in the frame, sealed screws on the mabati, anchors under the racking and supports for the services. Galaxy supplies every stage from one quote.
Holding-down bolts and footings
Foundation bolts are typically M20, M24 or M30 in grade 8.8 or 4.6, in base-plate holes 6 mm oversize. Four bolts per column are preferred even on a pinned base, because they stop columns falling over before the frame is braced.
Columns, rafters and bracing
Portal-frame eaves and apex connections use grade 8.8 or 10.9 bolts; simple connections use M20 grade 8.8 fully threaded bolts in 22 mm holes. Preloaded bolts are seldom needed in buildings.
Purlins and mabati cladding
Purlins usually sit at 1.5 to 2.0 m centres. On the roof, screws go through the crest of the mabati profile, square to the sheet and no closer than 25 mm to the sheet end, each with an EPDM sealing washer.
Slab, racking and mezzanines
Every rack upright is anchored to the slab with an anchor approved for cracked concrete; the SEMA code asks each upright-to-floor connection to carry at least 3 kN in tension and 5 kN in shear.
Pipes, sprinklers, power and fire stopping
Services hang from the roof steel on strut, rod and clamps. Sprinkler hangers must be FM or UL listed for their size, and pipe openings through fire walls need a seal tested to EN 1366-3.
Offices, doors, safety and upkeep
Offices, doors and safety go in last. After handover, racking should be inspected by a competent person at least every 12 months, and saved lists make restocking quick.

What fasteners does a steel-frame warehouse need?
Holding-down bolts or anchors in the foundations; grade 8.8 or 10.9 bolts with nuts and washers in the frame; self-drilling screws or roofing bolts with sealing washers on the sheeting; bolt anchors under racking and mezzanines; strut channel, clamps and hangers for services; fire stopping; and drywall screws and fixings for the offices.
My portal-frame base is pinned. Why four holding-down bolts?
Although the base is nominally pinned, four holding-down bolts are preferred for safety, because they help stop columns falling over before the frame is complete and braced.
A cast-in bolt is missing or in the wrong place. What now?
The structural engineer may approve a post-installed bonded anchor: threaded rod set in injection mortar approved for cracked concrete, such as fischer FIS A rod with fischer mortar. Do not substitute without the designer's approval.
Do pallet racks have to be bolted to the floor?
Where lift trucks or order pickers work, yes: UK HSE guidance (HSG76) says free-standing racks should not be used in those areas, and every upright next to an aisle should be fixed to the floor.
How often should racking be inspected?
A technically competent person should inspect it at intervals of no more than 12 months and give a written report (HSE HSG76).
