Questions buyers ask
Do spring washers stop bolts loosening under vibration?
Not reliably: transverse-vibration (Junker) tests show helical spring washers can even speed up loosening. Wedge-locking washers such as Nord-Lock hold the bolt by clamp tension instead of friction.
Blue or red threadlocker?
Medium-strength (blue) threadlocker locks bolts that will be serviced and comes apart with hand tools. High-strength (red) is for permanent locking and may need heat to remove.
How do I repair a stripped thread?
Fit a wire thread insert: drill out the damaged thread, tap the hole with the insert tap, wind in the insert with its tool and break off the tang.
Is this bolt metric, UNC or BSW?
Metric and UNC/UNF threads have a 60 degree angle; BSW and BSF have 55 degrees with rounded crests. A quick check at 1/2 inch: BSW has 12 threads per inch, UNC has 13. Confirm with a pitch gauge.
Which grease nipple do I need?
DIN 71412 nipples are the most common, in straight, 45 and 90 degree forms. Match the thread in the tapped hole first; M6 x 1, M8 x 1, M10 x 1, R1/8 and R1/4 are common.

HSS, cobalt or SDS: the right drill bit for steel, stainless and concrete
Which drill bit for mild steel, stainless, brick and concrete: HSS DIN 338, cobalt, SDS Plus and SDS Max, with speeds, sizes and what 10/100/160 means.

Socket cap, countersunk, button or grub: choosing Allen screws
The four hex socket (Allen) screw heads, what each is for, the hex key size for every metric size, and when 12.9 black beats A2 stainless.

DIN 933 or DIN 931? Full thread vs half thread hex bolts
DIN 933 is threaded to the head, DIN 931 keeps a plain shank. Which one carries shear, which one suits tapped holes, how to pick the length and grade.

Stainless, zinc-plated or galvanised: fasteners for outdoor and coastal sites
Choosing fasteners that will not rust: zinc-plated indoors, hot-dip galvanised outdoors, stainless A2 and A4 by the sea, and the mistakes that cause early corrosion.

Inch or metric? Reading bolt sizes like 1/2" x 1-1/2" and M12 x 40
How to read and order inch and metric bolts: diameter first, then length, UNC, UNF and BSW threads, and why an M12 nut will not fit a 1/2 inch bolt.

Fixing steel to concrete: wedge, sleeve or chemical anchor?
Which anchor holds steel on concrete: wedge anchors, sleeve (rawl) bolts or chemical anchors, with sizes, installation steps and when to use each.
