Questions buyers ask
Which drywall screw for metal studs or timber?
Fine-thread drill-point screws for light steel studs up to about 1 mm thick; coarse-thread screws grip better in timber framing.
How do I fix a door frame to blockwork?
With a push-through frame fixing such as fischer SXR, assessed under ETA-07/0121 for windows, doors and gates: countersunk screws for timber frames, hex heads for metal ones.
Do MDF screws need pilot holes?
Yes. Drill pilots at 85 to 95% of the screw's core diameter and at least 1 mm deeper than the screw, and keep face screws 12 mm from edges and 25 mm from corners.
How do I get a strong thread in thin sheet or tube?
Fit a blind rivet nut. It sets from one side and gives a load-bearing thread in thin walls and hollow sections, without tapping or welding a nut.
What holds heavy items on a hollow wall?
A metal cavity fixing or plasterboard fixing spreads the load behind the board; for very heavy items fix through into the stud or frame.
